Part of the dynasty that propelled the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl wins in the 1970s, Mel Blount is as devoted to the sport of cutting as he is to professional football. My profile of the NFL legend in Chatter Magazine, the official publication of the National Cutting Horse Association, pays homage to the natural athlete and philanthropist, who hopes to be remembered for “the good I’ve done for others.”
Oh, What a Year!
The feature for Pittsburgh Quarterly looked back at how the British Invasion and the prospect of a Beatles backstage pass launched my writing career. It was 1964, and I’d managed to talk the editor of a local newspaper into letting me write a column for teens.
Jazz Renaissance
When we think of jazz, cities like New Orleans, Chicago and New York come to mind, but Pittsburgh has a rich legacy that dates back at least 100 years. A finalist for a Golden Quill Award in 2022, my feature for Pittsburgh Quarterly took a look at the remarkably diverse jazz scene enjoying a resurgence in the city.
Long Time Passing
More than 50 years after the war ended in Vietnam, a group of Pittsburgh area vets went to Washington D.C. to be recognized for their service. I went along with them and told their stories in a feature for Pittsburgh Magazine that was a finalist for a Golden Quill Award in 2018.
