Oh, What a Year!

The feature for Pittsburgh Quarterly looked back at how the British Invasion and the prospect of a Beatles backstage pass launched my writing career. It was 1964, and I’d managed to talk the editor of a local newspaper into letting me write a column for teens.

Jazz Renaissance

When we think of jazz, cities like New Orleans, Chicago and New York come to mind, but Pittsburgh has a rich legacy that dates back at least 100 years. A finalist for a Golden Quill Award in 2022, my feature for Pittsburgh Quarterly took a look at the remarkably diverse jazz scene enjoying a resurgence in the city.

Long Time Passing

More than 50 years after the war ended in Vietnam, a group of Pittsburgh area vets went to Washington D.C. to be recognized for their service. I went along with them and told their stories in a feature for Pittsburgh Magazine that was a finalist for a Golden Quill Award in 2018.

Killer Blondes

Hired as Editor in Chief and tasked with reinventing the magazine in 2015, I enlisted celebrity hairdressers Ted Gibson and Jason Backe to reimagine iconic Hitchcock blondes for a feature in American Salon that was shot on location at the estate of novelist Monte Schulz (Crossing Eden) in Santa Barbara, California.
